Do You Wanna Build a Snowman? Winter Break Ideas
It's Winter Break! Well, almost. The rush to turn in assignments is happening. The "What can I do for extra credit?" conversation can be heard in classrooms all over. Making plans for vacations? Mapping out a sleep and R&R schedule? Have you started your holiday shopping yet?!
It's an interesting time of year. It is the end of 2017 so we reflect on the year. Maybe your Facebook account has conveniently put a slideshow together for you. It is also the mid-point in the academic year. High school seniors wait for college acceptance letters. College students bring laundry home. Parents worry that two weeks out of school will set their child(ren) back academically. So, how do you make the most out of Winter Break? How do you balance relaxation with responsibilities?
Some experts recommend reading. Read anything. A book, magazines, web pages. Just read. Keep your mind moving. Keep your vocabulary flowing. And, to add a family component, parents might want to read the books their children are reading and have conversations about the stories.
What a great time to reconnect with personal interests! Has it been months since you painted? What about that project sitting in the closet? Have you hiked that trail you've been eying? DO IT! There's no better time than the present.
Maybe make some extra cash. Offer to be a personal shopper. Do some pet sitting for people going out of town for the holidays. Seasonal employment is a great way to pick up a few dollars without long-term commitment. Does it snow where you are? Shovel driveways and sidewalks. Babysit for people so they can secretly "visit Santa's workshop" in preparation for the holiday (gotta keep the magic alive, right?).
Or, maybe volunteer work is up your alley. Does a church need extra hands for their holiday services? Is there a shelter in your area that serves meals or prepares gift packages for people in need? What about nursing homes that allow volunteers to visit the residents who might not otherwise have anyone with them during the holidays?
If sleep is on your agenda, that's okay! Own it. Take the rest if you need it. Be careful not to get too comfy though. You do have to get "back to reality" in a couple of weeks.
Some great movies are coming out in the next couple of weeks. Maybe invite a friend you haven't seen in a while to go see a matinee? I believe there is a little, lesser known movie called "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" coming out December 15. Or, maybe Pitch Perfect 3 is more your speed (Ruby Rose is in this one!!), coming out December 22. Maybe you want to be IN movies! Check out your area for anyone needing extras in commercials, films, or tv shows. Ozark is filming around the corner from me. Anytime, Jason Bateman, just say the word.
Check-in with yourself. Have you accomplished what you wanted to this year? Are you on track for academic goals? If not, all is not lost. Ask for help. If you are on track, great! Don't lose momentum. Talk to people in your life who can keep you accountable. And, above all else, take time to enjoy the season, whatever that means for you.
